12 million people work in the renewable energy sector. The largest job market is China.
Renewable energies such as wind power or photovoltaics are becoming increasingly important, and this is also reflected in the number of jobs. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has now presented figures on this. From 2019 to 2020, the number of people employed in the sector worldwide will rise from 11.5 million to 12 million.
At 39 percent, China represents the largest labor market for renewable energies. 4.7 million people work in this industry there. Not surprisingly, the country is investing heavily in solar and wind energy, adding 136 gigawatts last year, according to the ILO.
Women make up one-third of the renewable energy workforce, but their share varies widely by country and industry. In its report, the ILO argues for greater diversity in the workforce, saying this would ultimately help attract much-needed new talent to the industry.
