Malaysia: Lynas Allowed to Import Rare Earths until 2026

SHARE

Operating permit for the Kuantan refinery updated.

Lynas will be allowed to import rare earth concentrate into Malaysia for further processing until March 2026. According to the Australian company (PDF), the operating permit has been updated. Previously, the permit was only valid until early 2024, after which specific processes would no longer have been allowed to take place in Kuantan. The reason for this was the slightly radioactive residues produced in the process.

Last week, the company announced that despite these conditions, which had been in place until then, production capacity at the site was to be increased even more significantly. For the necessary work, operations there will be largely shut down from mid-November (we reported).

According to its own information, Lynas has so far invested the equivalent of almost 630 million US dollars in the Southeast Asian country and is also pushing ahead with the construction of its own refinery in Australia.
