Lynas and MP Materials: Talks About Cooperation “Currently Not Ongoing”

by | 5. Feb 2024 - 10:08 | Economy

At the end of last week, rumors were circulating about a potential cooperation between MP Materials and Lynas. Rumors of a merger of the two rare earth specialists were reported in industry circles, wrote the Australian Financial Review. There have indeed been talks about a possible transaction, but they are “currently not ongoing,” commented Lynas, without giving details of the dialog’s content. The company focuses on strong organic growth, as it added in a press release (PDF), a formulation that speaks against acquisitions or mergers.

Despite its comparable market capitalization, Lynas would be the senior partner in potential cooperation constellations considering the companies’ respective turnover rates. In addition, the Australian company can cover large parts of the value chain for rare earths with its refinery in Malaysia and soon also in its home country. MP Materials is still dependent on partners in China.
