Gallium and Germanium: First Export Licenses Issued

by | 21. Sep 2023 - 13:56 | Politics

After China announced export controls on gallium and germanium, exports of these technology metals came to a standstill in August. However, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has now given the all-clear for the time being. As reported by Reuters several export licenses have now been issued to Chinese companies. According to its own information, this includes the manufacturer of semiconductor materials Tongmei, which can again supply its customers with gallium arsenide and germanium substrate. The background for the restrictions is national security, according to Beijing’s justification. Both gallium and germanium can be used as dual-use goods for civilian purposes as well as military technology.
