Leading U.S. rare earth producer receives support from the state of California.
MP Materials, the leading producer of rare-earth materials in the United States, is working to establish a fully integrated domestic value chain for these critical resources to reduce reliance on imports from China. Through its Mountain Pass operation in California, the company currently operates the only active rare earth mine in the country. In parallel, MP is expanding its downstream capabilities, including rare earth processing, separation, and permanent magnet manufacturing.
The company’s recycling business is now set for a major expansion. The state of California will provide $120 million to support the recovery of rare earth elements from end-of-life electronic devices at the Mountain Pass site. The funding is being granted under the “California Competes Tax Credit” program, which links tax incentives to capital investment and job creation.
MP Materials is already active in the recycling segment and plans to supply rare earth magnets to technology giant Apple in the future.
The company’s strategic importance to U.S. efforts to achieve greater raw material independence became evident last summer, when the federal government acquired a stake in the business.
Additional insight into MP Materials’ operational performance is expected with the company’s quarterly results, scheduled for release tomorrow.
